Enjoy musical classics at the DFP this January
The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (PMO) will serve glitter, drama, dance, jazz hands and most importantly, magic to us all under the baton of Gerard Salonga in a concert themed MPO goes Broadway! The concert takes place on Saturday 28 January 2023 at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS, KLCC.
What’s the occasion? It’s the MPO’s 25th Anniversary, that’s what! To sweeten the deal, the programme of the night will also include West Side Story’s 25-minute suite entitled ‘Symphonic Dances’ which evokes a synthesis of Bernstein’s “poem to New York” in all its lively energy.
Moreover, the Broadway programme will also feature Kander’s excerpts from Chicago. This musical now holds the record as the longest running show to have premiered on Broadway so it will be interesting to see how the MPO adapts this to their performance.
Part of the concert agenda includes the MPO performing Wildhorn’s ‘Someone Like You’ taken from Jekyll & Hyde, which closed after more than 1,500 performances on Broadway since 1997. What’s more, the MPO will also be performing Hamlisch’s ‘What I Did For Love’ taken from A Chorus Line which ran over 6,000 performances on Broadway since its opening in 1975.
What we reckon is the highlight of the Broadway musical is Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera Suite’. Why is this musical so important? Well, it opened in London in 1986, saw more than 14,000 performances and was seen by 100 million people worldwide in 27 countries so we are certain you won’t want to miss this.
Additionally, Schonberg’s suites from Miss Saigon and Les Miserables will also be part of the evening’s itinerary. Miss Saigon won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score, and was translated into 12 languages in 25 countries. Meanwhile, Les Misérables holds the record as the longest running musical ever in London with nearly 15,000 performances and still counting.
Furthermore, talented singers Izen Kong, Sean Ghazi, YiLing Chaing and Ida Mariana will all be lending their voices to the MPO’s Broadway interpretations. Visit the Official MPO Website to further details and tickets.
