Renowned Italian maestro Roberto Abbado returns to the DFP podium to weave his magic on the MPO in this auspicious event. The concert is more exciting when it recognizes two of the country’s most talented musicians of the younger generation. It will open with a brand new work by Eugene Tong entitled Panaon (or Journey), a celebratory experience for the ages.

Moreover, this music demonstrates a Bornean breeze, within the symphony lies the heart and soul of Sabah, interwoven intricately through resonant strings and guided by the ethereal sounds of the traditional instrument called ‘sundatang.’
Next, renowned pianist Tengku Irfan will take centrestage. Not only is he a natural choice to appear on this programme as a soloist for Liszt’s Piano Concerto No.2 with the MPO, this exceptionally talented artist was born in the same year as the MPO’s inception and he said, “The MPO’s existence is paramount; my musical life and career would not have started without it.”
The Prodigal Son Returns
Since his debut with the MPO at 11, Irfan has achieved many accolades at the international classical music world including three ASCAP Morton Gould Awards. In 2018, he was appointed as the MPO Youth Ambassador in conjunction with the MPO’s 20th anniversary and has continued to inspire the youth and nurture the love of classical music through his collaborations with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO).
On top of that, the MPO will bring the concert to a rapturous climax with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in Ravel’s highly imaginative orchestration. This concert aims to bring together individuals who share a passion for music and a desire to make a difference.
