The Manolo Blahnik Winter 22 Collection
Every footwear of this new collection features intricate details that underscore sustained emphasis on exquisite craftsmanship. Beginning with his beloved Italy for Winter 22, he looked to the pioneering Murano glassware designs of Paolo Venini.
The works’ graphic banding and abstract shapes led to a series of bold irregular stripes on distinctly modern silhouettes like the WELLI sandal, JAYLA boots and BB pumps. Additionally, the expressive, inventive style of Italian futurist painter Lucio Venna inspired the season’s avant-garde PVC styles outlined in soft suede.
Interpreting the creative vision and graphic forms of multidisciplinary artist Fabien Baron, Blahnik homed in on elegant simplicity for minimalistic yet dimensional patent-and-suede flats, pumps and boots. In studying the poetic shapes of Italian post-war architect Carlo Scarpa, Blahnik developed an exaggerated vamp with window-like cutouts.
This expressive detail can be found on the Winter 22 FUGATI mules. For Winter 22 Blahnik revisited the eclectic elegance of disco-era icon Gloria Gaynor. The glamour of the decade passed through Blahnik’s lens of characteristic joy led to exaggerated crystal buttons on the dazzling BOBOLA boot, ELHOB sandal and ELBOLITA pump.
For this season’s new heel shape, Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor served as the designer’s muse. Blahnik created a sculptural wedge in an almond shape that mimics the curve of Taylor’s distinctive dark eyeliner.
The ROCAR sandal and SILLAS boot were derived from Taylor’s role in the 1974 Italian Film The Driver’s Seat. Blahnik created the Winter 22 collection from a typically eclectic set of references with, as always, exquisite craftsmanship, joy and timeless elegance.
