Netflix Unveils Upcoming Indonesian Made Films And Series

Netflix goes big on representation of SEA culture with this ambitious news

Netflix has just made their most bold and ambitious announcement, the streaming titan has just unveiled a whole slew of made-in-Indonesia films and series via seven new titles spanning thrillers, comedies and period dramas at their Waktu Netflix Indonesia (Time For Netflix Indonesia) event.Netflix

Rusli Eddy, the Content Lead Indonesia for Netflix, stated, “The Indonesian film industry has evolved rapidly in recent years. More and more creators and stories from Indonesia are now being seen and appreciated by audiences and critics around the world.”

“Our upcoming slate from Indonesia gives you authentic and unique stories, a representation of our country that is rich with stories and cultures, and brings you high-caliber talent whose significant works have shaped the film industry.” He added.

Now while Netflix already has shown exceptional Indonesian titles like Ali & Ratu Ratu Queens and Photocopier since its establishment as a streaming service in the country in 2016, this upcoming list of content is proof of the commitment that the American streaming platform has for Indonesia and SEA content in general.

One of these captivating stories that Netflix subscribers can enjoy at the end of the years is a film from Timo Tjahjanto called The Big 4 which tells the story of a stiff female detective who teams up with a band of down-on-their-luck assassins investigating her father’s murder.

Showrunner Shanty Harmayn, and directors Kamila Andini and Ifa Isfansyah, will also release Netflix’s first Indonesian period drama called, Gadis Kretek, a story set against the backdrop of Indonesia’s cigarette industry in the 1960s.

Part of the slate includes the new sci-fi thriller Nightmares and Daydreams helmed by distinguished director, Joko Anwar. The new series ls about ordinary people who encounter odd phenomena with many different storylines intersecting with each other.

Other exciting films and series announced include Dear David, Klub Kecanduan Mantan (Ex-Addicts Club) Hari Ini Akan Kita Ceritakan Nanti (Today We’ll Talk About That Day), the latest installment from the Nanti Kita Cerita tentang Hari Ini (One Day We’ll Talk About Today) universe and Komedi Kacau (Comedy Chaos).
