The MPO Pays Tribute To Legendary Malaysian Music Star Sudirman Arshad

Take a trip down memory lane at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas
As part of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO)’s 25th anniversary celebration, the orchestra continues to appease the music appetites for local music lovers when it celebrates the music of legendary Sudirman Haji Arshad on Saturday, 16 September 2023 at 8.30 pm at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas (DFP).
A Patriotic Concert
It is only natural for the MPO to pay tribute to a Malaysian music icon loved by many on Malaysia Day. The late Dato Sudirman Haji Arshad became the winner of Bintang RTM in 1976 and then, the rest was history. He went on to become one of the most prolific and respected singers in the country.
Moreover, one of the most prominent concert events in Malaysia was his groundbreaking open-air concert at Chow Kit Road in 1986 which drew 100,000 people. The Singing Lawyer’s biggest achievement was in 1989 when he became the winner at Salem Asia Music Award held at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Why Sudirman
Sudirman is famed for music which transcends genres, race and age; he sang in multiple languages such as Malay, English, Chinese and Indian, further affirming his exceptional versatility.
Through this special concert, the MPO will capture the essence of Sudirman’s legacy by presenting a programme of varied themes and genres. Songs to be performed consists of traditional tunes (Joget Kenangan Manis and Apa Khabar Orang Kampung), mesmerizing ballads (Merisik Khabar, Pelangi Petang and Hujan), Broadway (Big Spender and Memories), ‘the people’s songs’ (Punch Card and Basikal Tua) and, in conjunction with Malaysia Day, Warisan and 31 Ogos.
In Good Hands
The concert will be helmed by Ahmad Muriz Che Rose and the concert will feature the powerhouse vocals of Liza Aziz (who was a background singer for Sudirman), Hazama, Ernie Zakri and Arish Mikael. Their artistry, blended with the musicianship of the MPO, will definitely give a concert experience the audience will never forget.
The concert will take place on Saturday, 16 September 2023 at 8.30 pm. Tickets are priced from RM288 to RM588 and are available at the Official MPO Website.
