Enjoy unforgettable Gagosian art on your next visit to Seoul
Gagosian proudly announces “Derrick Adams: The Strip,” marking its inaugural exhibition in Seoul, Korea. Opening on 3 September 2024, at Amorepacific’s headquarters in central Seoul, alongside Frieze Seoul, the showcase will unfold in the prestigious APMA Cabinet, a curated project space on the ground floor of the David Chipperfield–designed building.
A South Korean Debut
Nick Simunovic, senior director at Gagosian, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We are thrilled to debut in Seoul following Jiyoung Lee’s appointment to lead our operations in Korea last year. Hosting Derrick Adams’s exhibition at Amorepacific’s headquarters is a privilege, offering a perfect setting to introduce his work to Seoul’s vibrant community of art enthusiasts and collectors.”
Adams’s latest series of paintings draws inspiration from the vibrant displays of beauty supply stores near his Brooklyn studio and worldwide. Featuring groups of mannequin heads adorned with colourful wigs, his artworks are set against textured reliefs of city bricks bearing traces of urban life.
Art And Life
These compositions seamlessly integrate reflections of sidewalks, streets, and passing cars, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The paintings, created in various sizes and configurations, are complemented by two sculptures utilising mannequin heads and wigs as artistic elements.
The exhibition not only celebrates Adams’ debut in Korea but also underscores Gagosian’s commitment to showcasing innovative contemporary art in dynamic global settings. Amorepacific’s headquarters provide an exceptional backdrop, enhancing the dialogue between Adams’ evocative creations and Seoul’s cultural landscape.
Art For The Mind
Visitors can anticipate an immersive experience that explores themes of urban aesthetics, identity, and the intersection of consumer culture with artistic expression. As Adams’ works bridge personal narratives with broader societal reflections, “Derrick Adams: The Strip” promises to captivate and provoke thought among art enthusiasts in Seoul and beyond, so don’t miss out.
